Washington Hawthorne

The Washington Hawthorne tree, Crataegus Phaenopyrum, is a broadly oval to rounded, dense, thorny tree. The foliage is a reddish purple when unfolding and gradually changing to lustrous dark green at maturity. Fall color varies from orange to scarlet to purplish. Flowers are white and +÷ diameter. Plant 4-6¦ apart in the row for a hedge. It has low water requirements and shows a high tolerance to salt and alkali soils. The tree flowers in early spring with a profusion of white blossoms.

White Ash

The White Ash tree, Fraxinus Americana, is a handsome native tree. It develops an open and rather round topped crown in its old age. This is the largest of the ash trees in North America. Mature trunks can reach almost 6 feet in diameter. This deciduous tree has firm gray bark with diamond-shaped furrows and interlacing ridges. The wood is hard, strong, elastic, and very useful. Several kinds of birds eat the fruit. The foliage is dark green in the summer and turns to yellow or maroon in the fall. It is tall, stately, and long lived.

White Oak

The White Oak tree, Quercus alba, is a great majestic long-lived tree that will last for generations. It is an excellent wildlife source of food mass in the form of acorns. This deciduous shade tree has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Does best on deep, moist, well-drained, acid soils. Advantages of the White Oak are that they are easily transplanted when young and they have a high resistance to ice breakage and oak wilt. They require very little maintenance.

Willow Oak

The Willow Oak tree, Quercus phellos, is one of the most popular trees for streets, parks, estates, and residential properties. This shade tree is also grown as far north as Cape Cod with reasonable success. A beautiful specimen oak, the Willow Oak is a relatively fast growing species, about 2¦ a year. The Willow Oak is a good street tree because it is tolerant of heat, drought, air pollution and standing water. Acorns are a good food source for birds and squirrels. The small leaves are easy to clean up in the fall.

Kousa Dogwood

The Kousa Dogwood tree, Cornus kousa, or Japanese Flowering Dogwood, is a handsome small specimen tree or shrub. The Kousa is not as susceptible to disease as the White Dogwood in spring. It is planted as a specimen, near a patio, or in groupings. Kousa Dogwood trees blooms later than the White Dogwood and with a softer petal flower than the White Flowering Dogwood. The flowering tree, Kousa Dogwood, has low water requirements and displays a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils.

American Beech

The American Beech tree, Fagus Grandifolia, has a short trunk, with a spreading crown and is a very stately tree.The American Beech grows best in full sun, but will withstand partial shade. This deciduous species has leaves that are a beautiful dark green in the summer and turn to a golden brown fall color. This beech tree is a dense shade tree whose nuts attract birds and squirrels. American Beech trees have a slow to moderate growth rate.

Flame Willow

The Flame Willow, 'Salix Willow', gets it's name from the stems that turn red in late fall and lasts until early spring. It grows multistemmed, more like a shrub, unless trained otherwise.The Flame willow is very hardy and responds well to pruning. Plant these as specimens or in a line along a border. They grow fast and can be planted as privacy screens where the fall color will be fabulous!

Korean Evodia

The Korean Evodia, 'Evodia daniellii' is one of the few flowering trees that flower in the summer, rather than spring. White flowers are borne in mid summer and are quite showy. Fruit remains during the winter and adds interest to an uninteresting time of year. This plant appears to do better in good soils and seems somewhat intolerant of impoverished soils. This plant's small size will allow it to be used in restricted spaces, keeping in mind that it is as wide as tall. It is a good honey plant and the foliage looks good all summer.

Texas Red Oak

The Texas Red Oak, 'Quercus buckleyi' is also known as Spanish Oak, Spotted Oak, Red Oak, and Rock Oak. This medium sized tree may achieve a height of 30 feet or more and an equal spread. The Texas Red Oak develops a rather typical shape and form for the species, with a dense rounded canopy. The Texas red oak may also be found as a multi-trunked specimen in the wild. They are moderately fast growing for a hard wood tree. The bark is thick with scaly ridges separated by deep, dark fissures.

Shantung Maple

The Shantung Maple, 'Acer trucatum', is an outstanding small tree. It has glossy, dark green star shaped foliage that remains in good condition throughout the season. It develops good fall color ranging from clear yellow to reddish purple. Its quality and adaptability make it worth growing. It is an excellent tree for small lawns and street tree use.It does well in full sun and in general seems to be quite adaptable. It of northern China but has a very large native range. It tolerates heat and alkaline soils.

Tatarian Maple

The Tatarian Maple, Acer tataricum', is quite similar to Amur Maple and the two species readily hybridize when grown together. Tatarian Maple grows slightly larger and is naturally more tree like in growth habit. The Tatarian Maples are slightly larger and usually develop a good red coloration when maturing. Fall color is usually yellow to reddish brown. A good tree for planters or patios. It has excellent small tree form and good foliage quality.

Balsam Fir

The Balsam Fir, 'Abies balsamea', exhibits a relatively dense, dark-green, pyramidal crown with a slender spire-like tip. The scientific name "balsamea" is an ancient word for the balsam tree, so named because of the many resinous blisters found in the bark. Balsam fir and Fraser fir have many similar characteristics.The species thrives in cooler climates and demands abundant soil moisture and a humid atmosphere. A large percentage of Christmas trees are Balsam Firs.

Serbian Spruce

The Serbian Spruce, 'Picea omorika', Serbian Spruce forms a narrow, pyramidal silhouette with graceful arching branches. The upper surface of the needles is glossy, dark green in contrast to the whitish lower surface.The Serbian spruce, with it's narrow pyramidal habit, allows its use in smaller scale landscape situations than most other conifer trees. It prefers moist well drained soils, and will tolerates alkaline sites.

The cones which occasion its names are indeed tipped by slender spines or bristles. Looks aside, bristlecone pine is famous because in its arid mountain home of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, it can live for thousands of years. In cultivation it proves slow, bushy, dark and enduring of difficult sites.

Prairie Gold Aspen

The Prairie Gold Quaking Aspen, 'Populus tremuloides µPrairie Gold¦, is a fast-growing tree that grows in everything from moist sandy soil to shallow rocky soils and clay. It has attractive cream-colored bark, beautiful silvery catkins in early spring, and lustrous dark green leaves that flutter in the slightest breeze, finally turning yellow in fall. It should perform well in other parts of the Great Plains and the front range of the Rockies as well. Grows to 35-40¦ high and 20-30¦ wide.

The Serviceberry tree, Amelanchier canadensis, may also be known as a Juneberry, Shadblow, or Shadbush. This large shrub has erect stems that form multi-stemmed clumps The serviceberries, genus Amelanchier, are deciduous shrubs or small trees that grow in the understory of temperate forests. The little serviceberry shrubs are useful in naturalized plantings, especially in open woodlands, under tall oaks or pines. Their beautiful, but brief, early spring flowering beats all but the earliest shrubs, and their fall foliage is first rate. It is an excellent small yard tree.

The Heritage River Birch tree, Betula nigra, 'Heritage', is the most prominent of all the cultivars of River Birch trees. It is faster growing, has larger, glossier leaves and is less prone to leaf spot than the other species. The bark exfoliates on younger trees and opens to a lighter, salmon-colored trunk. The exposed inner bark is gray-brown to cinnamon-brown to reddish brown. This tree is handsome without leaves because of its graceful silhouette and exfoliating bark.

Kentucky Coffee Tree

The Kentucky Coffee Tree, Gymnocladus Dioicus, may also be known as American coffee berry, Kentucky mahogony, nicker treet, or stump tree. Kentucky Coffee trees are large round-barked trees belonging to the legume family and reaches heights of 60 to 100 feet. Its short trunk, 1 to 2 feet in diameter, divides into several large branches. This deciduous tree is ideal as a shade tree on larger, ungroomed properties. The bark is deeply furrowed and dark brown in colour. Fall color is yellow turning to orange.

White Flowering Dogwood

Austrian Pine

The Austrian Pine, Pinus nigra, is a densely branched tree producing long dark needles. This evergreen conifer tree thrives in urban locations as well as in windbreaks in more rural settings. The spreading branches of a young tree form a pyramidal outline, but at maturity, it sometimes achieves a picturesque flat topped head. Also good for thick screens or windbreaks. When placed in a good site it should reach 5 ft. in height in 6-7 years starting with a 2 year old seedling.

Bald Cypress

The Bald Cypress, Taxodium distichum, is a lofty, deciduous conifer of slender, pyramidal habit. A stately tree, for parks, yards. Landscapers and land owners use this tree in wet areas. Bald Cypress trees have moderate water requirements. The needle like leaves are dark green in the spring and summer. The "cypress knees" only develop when grown in or near water for most of the year. This species is very adaptable to wet and dry sites and thrives in many soil types.

Autumn Blooming Cherry

The Autumnalis Cherry, 'Prunus subhirtella "Autumnalis", also known as Autumn Blooming Higan cherry, produces beautiful pink blossoms in early spring. The Autumnalis is used for highways, buffers, patio plant specimens, and small yards. It also has nice winter interest with its attractive bark. The cultivar 'Autumnalis' has semi-double flowers with 10 petals instead of the normal five. 'Autumnalis' sometimes blooms sporadically in August, but still puts on its main show in spring. The one to four-inch-long dark green leaves are later joined by the appearance of small, black berries. The leaves cast light shade below the spreading canopy, and turn attractive fall colors of yellow and bronze before dropping.

Autumn Gold Ginkgo

The Autumn Gold Ginkgo, 'Ginkgo biloba "Autumn Gold", is a male cultivar (which are "fruitless"). 'Autumn Gold' is an all-male cultivar typically growing at maturity to 40-50' with a symmetrical, broadly spreading habit. The Gingko tree, Ginkgo biloba, is the sole surviving species of a group of Gymnosperms that flourished 65 million years ago, the time when dinosaurs existed. Gingko trees are also called Maidenhair trees. This tree can have a lifespan as long as 1,000 years. It is the only living gymnosperm (which includes pines, firs, and spruces) that sheds its leaves during the fall. Ginkgo are not native to North America, rather they are indigenous to China, Japan, and Korea, where they may still exist in remote mountainous parts. Today the tree is often planted in cities because of its remarkable resistance to urban smog and to insect pests. The Autumn gold is grown in average, medium wet soil in full sun. They prefer moist, sandy, well-drained soils. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions, including both alkaline and acidic soils and compacted soils. Also tolerant of saline conditions, air pollution and heat. Adapts well to most urban environments. No smelly fruits with this Gingko cultivar.

Black Cottonwood

The Black Cottonwood, 'Populus trichocarpa', is the largest of the American poplars. It is also known also as balsam cottonwood, western balsam poplar, and California poplar. The Black Cottonwood prefers moist sites. Many kinds of wildlife use the foliage, twigs, and buds for food, and the tree is planted for shade and in windbreaks and shelterbelts. Its dark green leaves contrast beautifully with its white trunk. This tree will become more drought tolerant when it is established. The leaf buds, as they swell in the spring, and the young leaves have a pleasing fragrance of balsam. The fragrance is especially pronounced as the leaves unfold.

The Peppermint Crape Myrtle, 'Lagerstroemia indica "Nana", is a semi-dwarf shrub with peppermint pink blossoms. Large clusters of pink flowers appear on the tips of new branches beginning in early summer and continue into fall. After flowers fade and fall from the tree, fruit remains in the form of small brown capsules. These fruits remain throughout the winter providing winter interest along with the attractive, exfoliating bark which peels away to expose a trunk which ranges in color from many handsome shades of brown to gray.The Peppermint Crape Myrtle is ideally suited for formal or informal design in the home landscape, street plantings and community plantings. Use it by driveways, walkways and especially below high decks and balconies for a view of the spectacular flower show that appears over the crown of this plant.

The Royal White Redbud is also a more compact tree than the Eastern Redbud. These trees are effective as a single specimen, in groupings, in a shrub border, and especially nice in woodland and naturalized type situations.It has large heart shaped leaves during the summer, and long seedpods in the fall. Slippery Elm

The Slippery Elm tree, 'Ulmus rubra', also know as Red Elm, is medium-sized tree that prefers moist soils. The leaves are large and very rough to the touch. It is distinguishable from other elms by its red, hairy buds and its rough, hairy twigs. The buds are covered with rusty red hairs and the wood is red to dark brown, hence the Latin name rubra, meaning red. The bark is deeply furrowed and brownish red. The inner bark is stringy, and slimy or slippery, hence the common name Slippery elm. It is less susceptible to Dutch elm disease than many elms, and has a different branching pattern. The inner bark was historically used for medicinal purposes. The inner bark is still used in the preparation of some throat lozenges.

Theves Poplar

The Theves Poplar, 'Populus nigra "Afghanica", is fast growing and very upright. The Theves Poplar is used for borders and screens. It is longer lived than the Lombardy Poplar. The columnar or spire-like form is often recommended for screens. The bark of older trunks is nearly white. The leaves are triangular-ovate and deep green in color.
