Hydrangea - Annabelle

The Hydrangea Annabelle, 'Hydrangea arborescens 'Annabelle', is a wonderful hydrangea that produces white flowers up to 12 inches across. Annabelle blooms every year even after severe pruning or intensely cold winters. The huge, white blooms appear in profusion every year without fail in early to late summer. It is perhaps the most popular old-fashioned shrub grown in American gardens today. The flower size increases as the season continues, so that the final flush is an extraordinary show! Lace Shrub - Crispa

The Lace Shrub, 'Stephanandra incisa 'Crispa', features maple-like, deeply cut, bright green leaves, up to 3" long, that turn yellow and orange in autumn. The red-purple to red-orange fall color is very attractive. The leaves are borne on arching branches which tend to weep downward and root at the tips, when soils are moist and organic. The leaf foliage and arching habit are the best ornamental features of this shrub. The Lace Shrub is used best as a dense, shrubby ground cover, very low hedge or foundation plant. This plant is also effective for erosion control on steep banks and slopes. Lace Shrub prefers moist, acidic, well-drained soil and it will flower in late spring.

Ninebark - Center Glow

The Ninebark Center Glow, 'Physocarpus opulifolius 'Center Glow’, is a new and exciting variety. Similar to 'Diablo', the foliage emerges a yellow-green but matures into bright, deep red that last all season long. With a plant height of 8-10' and a width of 8', the white flowers that bloom in spring add excitement to this shrub. Best to be planted in full sun, 'Center Glow' needs a well drained site. Rhododendron - Cloudland

The Rhododendron Cloudland, 'Rhododendron Impeditum', is a compact, mounded evergreen plant with silver-gray green foliage. The bright purple-blue flowers bloom early spring on old growth. Plant in well-drained soil, in a sheltered location protected from north wind. Protect from winter wind and afternoon sun. This plant requires moist, well-drained, acidic soil to prosper.

Rhododendron - Haaga

The Rhododendron Haaga, 'Haaga Rhododendron', is a new, hardy, dwarf variety from the University of Helsinki, Finland. It produces dark pink flowers which contrast nicely with the dark green, coarse foliage. The Haaga will begin to bloom in May. This plant needs excellent drainage, mulching and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil. It will not do well in windy sites. This dense evergreen shrub is a highly valued landscape ornamental. The large groups of showy pink flowers appear on even young plants. The Haaga is a very effective accent plant.

Rhododendron - Helsinki University

The Rhododendron Helsinki University, 'Rhododendron 'Helsinki University', produces bright pink flowers that are freckled with red. The bushes burst into bloom in late May to early June. The glossy green mature foliage opens in red tones on young plants. The Helsinki University is an evergreen with upright growth and it is super hardy. Plant in well-drained soil, in a sheltered location protected from north wind.

Rhododendron - Nova Zembla

The Rhododendron Nova Zembla, 'Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla', is a dense-growing, small evergreen shrub that displays large trusses of flowers. The red flowers will appear in mid spring. The Nova Zembla is very effective as an accent plant. For best results, feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom and keep the roots cool with a thick layer of mulch. This plant will attract butterflies and other wildlife. It is generally heat and sun tolerant and perhaps the most widely grown and successful red hybrid for harsh climates.

Rhododendron - Pohjolas Daughter

The Rhododendron, Pohjola's Daughter, 'Rhododendron 'Pohjola's Daughter', exhibits large fuchsia-pink buds that open shell pink and slowly turn white. Pohjola's Daughter is very hardy and flowers in early-midseason. The low mounding habit of this plant allows for placement in a myriad of landscapes. Pohjola's Daughter is a low dense bush, growing about 3 feet high, with much forking and it is often broader than it is tall. Rhododendron like acidic soils that are high in organic matter. High organic content assures that the soil will retain moisture, yet also drain well when too wet. These optimum conditions are typically achieved by planting into soil that has been amended with generous quantities of peat moss or organic materials.

Smokebush - Golden Spirit

The Smokebush Golden Spirit, 'Cotinus coggygria 'Golden Spirit', is a recent introduction from Europe. With a plant width of 6-8' and a plant height of 8-10', the leaf color lasts all season, turning brilliant shades or coral and orange into the fall. White blossoms appear in June to July when this deciduous shrub blooms with long, plume-like panicles of smoky-white flowers. 'Golden Spirit' will tolerate dry soil and does require full sun. It can be late to leaf out in spring and may suffer dieback at -25F.

Smokebush - Young Lady

The Smokebush 'Young Lady', Cotinus coggygria 'Young Lady', is a new and exciting variety from the Netherlands. 'Young Lady' is unlike any other in that it blooms pink as a young shrub; covering every inch of the plant, from June till August. With a plant height and width of 8-10', the foliage starts out blue-green. In the autumn, the leaf color turns yellow, orange and red. In a container it looks like a poodle in a pot with its frothy blooms covering every inch of the plant. Developed by Hendrik Kolster of Boskoop, Netherlands. A great plant for eye catching appeal in any yard.

St Johns Wort - Gemo

The St. John's Wort 'Gemo', 'Hypericum 'Gemo', has an extremely long bloom time, from July until September, which is the longest in its family. The foliage is willow like and it will reach a plant height of 2-3'. Plant in full sun, and use it as a backdrop in a perennial garden. It is from Denmark and is one of the top sellers. This tightly branched shrub is noted for its long bloom time. The flowers are a rich yellow, small but numerous.

St Johns Wort - Sunburst

The St. John's Wort 'Sunburst', 'Hypernicum', also known as Golden St. John's Wort, has excellent yellow blooms that appear from June until July. St. John's Wort is easy to maintain and grow, preferring full sun to part shade in well drained soil. It will perform better in rich, sandy loams. It is tolerant of some drought but mulching the roots in the winter would be suggested. St. John's Wort is noted for its large golden yellow flowers and attractive blue green foliage. Growing 3-4' tall and wide, it is a native from Kentucky to North Carolina south to Georgia, Alabama and Texas where it typically occurs in rocky hills, limestone glades and barrens. Use this plant in shrub borders, hedges, foundations and planted in mass.

Sweetspire - Little Henry

The Sweetspire Little Henry, 'Itea virginica', also known as Virginia Sweetspire Little Henry, is a great shrub for most landscapes. Place it in front of larger evergreens or it fits well with other perennials in your garden. Another outstanding attribute of Little Henry is it's dark green foliage which changes to a brilliant red in the fall, like a burning bush in fall color. The Little Henry will tolerate wet soils and it will stand some drought after it is established. Flowers in late summer and fall. If you do any pruning, do it after it flowers.

Willow - Dappled

The Dappled Willow, 'Salix Integra Hakuro-Nishiki', also known as Variegated Willow, is a small shrub that produces leaves that are variegated when they are young. The young branches grow out of the crown in all directions and will begin drooping slightly. This plant displays good winter interest with coral and red stems that contrasts with the landscape. Like all Willows, it thrives in moist soils. Prune in early spring to promote its elegant display and prune to promote variegated foliage. The Dappled Willow is a superb accent plant and it will be a focal point in beds and borders. The Variegated Willow is also used for foundation plantings, alongside water features and natural areas. Good in containers, also.

Willow - Japanese

The Japanese Willow, 'Salix Integra Flamingo', produces beautiful pink foliage all season long. The outer leaves turn a bright pink while the inner leaves are green and white. The Japanese Willow has 4 season interest. In the spring, before it leafs out, it produces hundreds of slender catkins that contrast brilliantly against the deep red stems. Then you see the pink summer foliage and in the fall and winter the striking red stems. You may prune the plant back for another flush of pink foliage later in the season. Regular pruning will promote a denser and bushier plant. Great as a container plant.

Yew - Densiformus

The Dens Yew, or Yew Densiformus, 'Taxus x media 'Densiformis', is one of the most popular evergreens shrubs today. This very popular yew is a rapid grower with a spreading habit and fluffy bright green needles. With a plant height of 4’ and a width of 6’, the dark green foliage adds color to every garden. Plant in full shade in a moist area, for it is intolerant of poor drainage and can be damaged if exposed to excessive winter sun and wind. This low maintenance shrub has dark green foliage that will turn a nice red to burgundy color in the fall. Tolerant to deer, pollution, rabbits and seashore breezes, this evergreen is not to be left out of any landscape.

Winter Honeysuckle

The Winter Honeysuckle, Lonicera fragrantissima, is sometimes called Sweet Breath of Spring. It is extremely fragrant (lemony), with creamy white flowers that appear in early spring before the leaves emerge. Flowers are followed by small, somewhat inconspicuous, red berries which mature in late spring to early summer. Easily grown in average, dry to medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Adapts to wide range of soils, including dry ones, but prefers moist, loamy soils. Prune to shape after flowering.

Adams Needle

The Adams Needle bush, Yucca filamentosa, has stiff evergreen rosettes and are part of the scene in hot dry Central and North American scrublands. Yuccas are hardier than they appear, and only fail in cold exposed inland positions, where they are better grown as container plants. This variety has a white edge. Yucca filamentosa makes dense clumps of stiff leaves 30 inches or so long and edged with fine curly hairs. The remarkable flower-spikes, 6' or more high, appear when plants are five or more years old.

Red Leaf Japanese Barberrt

The Barberry bush or RedLeaf Japanese bush, Berberis thunbergii, is a deciduous shrub reaching up to 24" tall and about 30" wide. The branches are slender, spiny, and small, and the leaves are roundly oval in a deep red to purple color. The small, yellow flowers borne beneath leaves, from April to May, are not showy. This plant is tolerant of many types of soil, but will not do well in wet to very moist soils. As name Barberry implies, this makes an excellent hedge or filler shrub.

Wintergreen Boxwood

The Korean Wintergreen Boxwood shrub, Microphylla koreana, is also known as the liffleleaf boxwood. It is a broadleaf evergreen upright shrub with medium green to dark green foilage. It is a formal or tightly informal shrub, usually reserved for shady conditions and commonly used as a hedge, foundation planting, edger, or facer shrub.

Bursting Heart Burning Bush

The Bursting Heart Burning bush, Euonymus americana 'Bursting Heart', is a unique shrub. In the spring and summer this shrub quietly takes the back seat to other seasonal color. However, in early fall, it draws curious looks with its unique display of fruit. Bumpy, raspberry-red pods hang on the ends of stems and split open to reveal small, smooth, red seeds. The lower limbs can be removed up to 2' or so and ground covers (foam flower, green and gold, ginger, etc.) planted to carpet the ground beneath. Grows 4-6'.

Compacta Burning Bush

The Burning Bush, Euonymus alatus 'Compacta' has an outstanding red fall color. The deep dark red leaves almost glow with color in the fall. The plant is shade tolerant but has inferior fall color and reduced density in shade. Burning Bush transplants easily and may be sheared. The orange and red fruit is ornamental if produced in quantity, but plants vary in the amount of fruit they produce. This deciduous bush withstands acidic or alkaline soils and a wide range of temperatures. Established plants can take some drought too.

Claret Purple Butterfly Bush

The Purple Butterfly Bush, Buddleia davidii 'ile de France', is a butterfly magnet. This bush flowers summer and fall and is easy to grow. With a name like Butterfly Bush you might expect a plant to be attractive to butterflies. In fact, it's more than attractive; it's a magnet for all the butterflies that pass through your garden seeking nectar. Butterflies and bees will flock to the honey-scented blossoms, whose dilute nectar is sweetest in midday sun. Plant it near a path or patio and the shrub will provide a delightful fragrance for you, too. It's generally pest-free.

Buttonbush

The Buttonbush, Cephalanthus occidentalis, is a rounded, 6 to 8 feet tall and occasionally reaqching 10 to 12 feet tall shrub. It is very open, almost gangly in habit. Flowers are creamy-white, on spherical heads, 1 to 1 1/4 inches long, blooming in late summer. It prefers moist situations, not dry tolerant, and best used for naturalizing in wet areas. Native from New Brunswick to Florida, west to Minnesota, Oklahoma and southern New Mexico, Arizona, California, into Mexico and Cuba.

Black Chokeberry

The Black Chokeberry, Aronia melanocarpa 'black', is an open, upright, spreading, somewhat rounded but leggy, deciduous shrub which typically grows 3-6¦ tall. It displays clusters of 5-petaled, white flowers in spring which are followed in early autumn by blackish purple, blueberry-sized fruits which usually do not persist into winter. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of wide range of soils. Best fruit production occurs in full sun. Spreads by root suckers to form colonies.

Red Chokeberry

The Red Chockecherry, Aronia arbutifolia 'Brilliantissima', cultivar is a deciduous shrub which typically grows slowly to 6-8' tall and is perhaps most noted for its attractive glossy red berries and red fall foliage color. Clusters of white to pinkish flowers appear in spring. Flowers are followed by abundant glossy red fruits (3/8" diameter) which appear in dense clusters along the branches. Best fruit production usually occurs in full sun.

Coral Red Dogwood

The Coral Red Dogwood, Cornus alba 'Sibirica', has stunning bright red bark which adds color to the winter garden. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence.Tolerant of a wide range of soils, it produces the brightest winter bark when planted in full sun. To keep the size of the plant in check and to encourage the most colorful bark, remove a third of the stems back to ground level each spring.

Greytwig Dogwood

The Gray Dogwood is a deciduous shrub which typically occurs in moist or rocky ground along streams, ponds, wet meadows, glade and prairie margins, thickets and rocky bluffs. It grows 10-15' tall and features white flowers borne in terminal racemes (hence the species name of racemosa) in late spring and grayish-green, elliptic to lance-shaped leaves (2-4" long). Can be particularly useful because of its ability to grow in poor soils. Easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Tolerant of city air pollution.

Redosier Dogwood

The Redosier Dogwood, Cornus sericea, is a freely spreading shrub with many stems, 3-18' tall; branching is opposite, young stems (and most old ones) often bright, smooth, shiny red. Leaves are opposite, deciduous, oval 5-10 cm long. White threads run through the veins toewards the leaf tip. Fruits are white, berry-like drupes, 7-9 mm long. This plant brightens up a winter landscape. Shade tolerant; provides cover and food for wildlife and birds. It is adapted to both wet and dry sites and a variety of soil types.

Silky Dogwood

The Silky Dogwood, Cornus amomum, has attractive white, greenish-white or yellow flower clusters in the spring and blue and white fruit in the fall. This plant tolerates poorly drained soils. It is used for hedgerows, windbreaks and for stream bank erosion control.The fruits are bluish in color. The fruit is eaten by game birds, especially important as a source of food for migrating songbirds. The twigs are an important source of winter browse for deer and rabbits. Mature height: a small to medium sized shrub to 12'.

American Elderberry

The American Elderberry, Sambucus canadensis, is a deciduous, upright shrub. It produces black or purple berries that are great for wildlife and jams and jellies. It has light gray or brown bark and is arching in form. Produces attractive flowers and berries all season long. Flattened panicles of small white flowers are produced in midsummer. It grows up to 12 feet in height and 10 feet in spread. Prefers moist soil and full sun. Native to North America.

Lynwood Gold Forsythia

The Lynwood Gold Forsythia, Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood Gold', is an old time favorite with an upright spreading habit and big yellow flowers up the entire length of stem. The flowering stems appear as deep golden wands in April. 'Lynwood Gold' is a dense growing plant with an upright habit. Spectabilis Forsythia

The Spectabilis Forsythis, Forsythia x intermedia, is a showy border Forsythia that transplants readily. It grows at a rapid rate and is long-lived. Tolerates a wide range of soil and light conditions, but prefers full sun. Often used to control erosion on steep slopes because tips of branches root naturally and plants spread easily. Suggested uses for this plant include border, specimen plant, and screen. Prune in spring after flowering so that buds for the next year can develop in the fall.

Heavenly Bamboo

The Heavenly Bamboo, Nadina domestica, is not a true bamboo but a upright 6-8¦ high, semi-evergreen shrub that tends to slowly sucker at the base, forming colonies. When this plant is in full sun it usually assumes a reddish tint in winter (depending on environmental conditions). Careful pruning, as canes do not branch out and best to thin out old stems every year or head back old canes at varying lengths to produce a dense plant. Once established, they are very tough plants, thriving in sun, shade, moist or dry conditions.

Pink Tatarian Honeysuckle

The Pink Tatarian Honeysuckle, Lonicera tatarica, originated in Southern Russia and Turkistan. Tatarian Honeysuckle is a tolerant, reliable shrub with good flowering and fruiting habits. It grows in sun or partial shade and any garden soil. The fragrant pink flowers are produced in mid-spring. Fruit and flower colors vary with the cultivar. Red Rum Honeysuckle

The Red Rum Honeysuckle, Lonicera maackii, is a deciduous shrub that grows to 8' to 12'. It produces masses of white flowers that mature to yellow followed by profusion of 1/4" bright red fruit persisting into winter.It has an upright vase shape. Leaves acquire a yellow fall color. False Indigo Indigo Bush

The False Indigo Bush, Amorpha fruticosa, is a somewhat leggy shrub, whose height can range from 6 to 20 feet tall,and 5 to 15 feet wide. Korean Lilac

The Dwarf Korean Lilac, Syringa meyeri 'palibin', is known as a compact but spreading, small-foliaged Lilac with showy late May lavender-purple flowers that are spread over the entire shrub canopy. It is the most common cultivar of the species, valued for its even more compact habit (to 4-6÷). Meyeri is named after F.N. The Minnesota Snowflake Mock Orange, Philadelphus x virginalis, is a compact, deciduous shrub that grows to only 3' tall. Features fragrant, double white flowers that bloom profusely in late spring. Flowers appear in clusters with 5-7 flowers per cluster. It has oval, dark green leaves (to 3.5" long). Blooms on previous year's growth, so prune immediately after flowering. May be cut to the ground (also after flowering) if shrub becomes scraggly, unkempt or otherwise in need of rejuvenation.

Sweet Mock Orange

The Sweet Mock Orange, Philadephus coronarius, is a deciduous shrub. This name is probably derived from the fragrant white flowers resembling orange flowers that some species and cultivars of mock oranges have. Some mock oranges are without fragrance. Flowers are single, semi-double, or double and they vary in size. There is no color change in the fall. It is possible that most mock oranges will suffer from occasional tip kill in zone 4 and quite often in zone 3.

The Chinese South Privet, Ligustrum sinense, is an abundant semi-evergreen small tree or large shrub, most commonly found invading the understory of moist areas. Copious amounts of fruits are produced. The berries turn black when ripe and are gobbled up by birds, which spread the seeds far and wide.The foilage is sometimes so thick that nothing can grow underneath the shrub. It usually reaches a height of 15 feet and has pretty white flowers in the late spring. Its oval leaves are dark green.

Londense Privet

The Londense Privet, Ligustrum vulgare lodense, is a dwarf privet hedge plant. It is very dense and compact. Ideal for a low hedge. Dark green foliage with white flowers. If left untrimmed it will reach a height of 4 feet.This privet is grown as a hedge plant because it tolerates shearing and is quite dense. The plant is densely branched but quite irregular in shape if not sheared. Privet tolerate most light exposures but is not as dense in the shade. It is easily transplanted and grows rapidly, and it retains its leaves into late fall.

Purpleleaf Sandcherry

The Purple Leaf Sandcherry, Prunus cistena, is a thick-growing, long-lived shrub that is sometimes called the Purple Leaf Sand Cherry. It produces bright red 3 inch leaves in spring and blushing, white flowers in May. In autumn it produces purple-black cherries and the foliage turns a magnificent reddish purple. It is an asset to the landscape and a standout specimen shrub. This deciduous plant makes a wonderful hedge as well.Plant 2-3 feet apart for a hedge and best planted in full sun.

French Pussy Willow

The French Pussy Willow, Salix discolor, grows well in almost any soil but it is a good idea to supplement it with peat moss, leaf mold or compost. They require full sun to thrive, but will survive in the shade as well. As with most willows, they do best when given lots of water. Although they can be allowed to grow unpruned, the plant will benefit from regular pruning after blooming.The catkins will develop and make a nice display for a considerable time.

Pink Pussy Willow

The Pink Pussy Willow, Salix discolor rosea, this form of Pussy Willow has pale pink catkins. This fast growing shrub is suitable for wet areas grow well in almost any soil. They require full sun to thrive, but will survive in the shade as well. As with most willows, they do best when given lots of water. For early bloom, cut branches of pussy willows may be brought in and set in a water filled vase in a sunny window anytime after the middle of January. The catkins will develop and make a nice display for a considerable time.

The Silver Pussy Willow, Salix chaenomeloides, is a handsome shrub with large red flower buds that develop into silky pink catkins. Reddish brown leaves mature to a dark blue green. This easy-to-grow willow has 2-1/2- to 3-inch-long catkins that emerge in early spring from dark red buds.At first silvery gray, the catkins take on a pink cast as they age. Equally significant are the rich mahogany-red stems, which add interest to the garden in winter. The plant prefers a sunny location and moist, well-drained soil.

Red Flowering Quince

The Red Flowering Quince, Chaenomeles speciosa, is valued for its spring flowers. The single or double rose like flowers emerge in clusters of 2v4, often before leaves develop. The oblong, serrated foliage opens bronze red and fades to a glossy dark green. It is very nice for a shrub border or espaliered to wall.Cut branches with swollen flower buds may be forced indoors, making a welcomed winter flower arrangement. Common Snowball Bush

The Common Snowball Bush, Viburnum opulus, also called the European Cranberry bush produces white flowers in late spring. It is a deciduous thicket-forming Old World shrub. In the fall, the leaves turn a wonderful burgundy reddish-purple. About the same time, the bright red, attractive berries ripen, and persist on the plant throughout the winter. Have a snowball fight in June! Kids and adults alike love this rounded plant with masses of flowers. Grows best in full sun to partial shade.

Spice Bush

The Spicebush, Lindera bezoin, is a native deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit which typically grows 6-12' high. Clusters of tiny, aromatic, greenish-yellow flowers bloom along the branches in early spring before the foliage emerges. Flowers of female plants give way to bright red drupes (to 1/2" long) which mature in fall and are attractive to birds. Female plants need a male pollinator in order to set fruit, however. Tolerates full shade, but habit becomes more open and wide-spreading.

Frobeli Spiraea

The Frobeli Spirea, Spiraea x bumalda, has new foliage that is purplish with bright pink to red early summer flowers. Vigorous grower with bright purplish-pink flowers in June-July. It has purplish tips on the foliage in spring.Leaves turn purple in fall for a striking color display. They will thrive in most locations. Snowmound Spiraea

The Snowmound Spirea, Spiraea nipponica, is an excellent dwarf shrub, with dense dark green foliage and masses of pure white flowers in May. Great for use as a foundation plant, in the shrub border or in a garden situation.Prune in the early spring before growth starts if shaping is needed and then again after the flowers are done blooming. This deciduous shrub prefers full sun to partial shade. It does best in well-drained soil with moderate to high levels of moisture. Prune older stems to the ground to thin and rejuvenate.

Van Houtteis Spiraea

The Spiraea Van Houttei's, Spiraea vanhouttei, has a foliage color of a dull bluish green. Flowers are white in April-May, borne in many flowered 1-2" diameter umbels. Outstanding deciduous shrub that is very showy in flower. Van Houtte Spirea is a durable and familiar shrub. Best growth occurs in a sunny location and any garden soil. The flowers are produced in spring after the leaves. The plant grows rapidly and may be used as a screen.

Flameleaf Sumac

The Flameleaf Sumac, Rhus copallina, is a shrub or occasionally a small tree. When left alone it will often form thickets. It is widespread in open uplands along fence rows and in waste places. It is a prolific sprouter after a fire.Leaves have a winged axis and turn flame red to dark purple in the fall, hence the common name. Fruit matures in late summer remaining attached into winter and is eaten by many species of birds and white-tailed deer. White-tailed deer also use it as a browse.

Fragrant Sumac

The Fragrant Sumac, Rhus aromatica, is a small shrub, most commonly encountered on limestone uplands, occasionally on acidic sites. It occasionally reaches tree size. Fragrant sumac is a pioneer species, establishing rapidly from seed after heavy disturbance, particularly fire. Like other sumacs, it forms clonal clumps, but not as extensively as the other species. Native Americans used the bark of all sumacs as an astringent, and leaves and bark can be used for tanning leather, due to the high tannin content.

Smooth Sumac

The Smooth Sumac, Rhus glabra, is a shade-intolerant pioneer on heavily disturbed sites, and is particularly common along road and railroad rights-of-way. Usually in clumps of several to many individuals in a clone, rarely more than 25 stems in one clone. Sumac will often be found within the first year following fire. Fruit is important as winter bird food. This is an important deer browse species. It is suited to group plantings in small to large yards. It is especially useful in attracting birds to naturalized yards.

Staghorn Sumac

The Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina, is the most well-known sumac. Its branches resemble deer antlers. Staghorn sumac reaches 25 feet in height at maturity with an equal spread. It is not as tolerant of poorly drained soils as other sumacs. The large dark crimson - or rarely orange to yellow - pinnate leaves of this sumac have 15-31 narrow, leaflets that can be up to (6") long. The large clumps form bright splashes of color along forest margins, road banks, and fencerows and in old fields over much of the Appalachians.

Sweetshrub

The Sweetshrub, Calycanthus floridus, or Carolina allspice is a dense, rounded deciduous shrub with a suckering habit which grows 6-9' tall with an equal or slightly greater spread. It features very fragrant, brown to reddish-brown flowers (2" across) which bloom at the ends of short branchlets in May. Use as a specimen near front door, patio or other living areas where the fragrant flower aroma may be enjoyed. It is utilized for shrub borders, foundations, and native plant areas.

Arrowwood Viburnum

The Arrowwood Viburnum, Viburnum dentatum, is a deciduous shrub which usually grows 6 to 8 feet in height, reaching 15 feet under ideal conditions. Spread is equal to height. The habit is dense and multistemmed with arching branches. The foliage is glossy dark green, fall colors are yellows, reds and purples. An adaptable and hardy shrub, produces many suckers, which must be pruned back to keep the plant compact. It withstands high pH, heavy soils and various climatic conditions, some salt tolerance.

Doublefile Viburnum

The Doublefile Viburnum, Viburnum tomentosum, is a lovely shrub that provides a three-season interest. It has large white, lacy blooms in spring. Scarlet berries in late summer, and beautiful maroon-purple fall foliage.Birds love this shrub. This shrub has a strong horizontal growth habit. Prune to maintain desired size. (4-5'). Easy to grow in sun or shade.

Pink Weigela

The Pink Weigela, Weigela florida, is a deciduous shrub that is prized for its showy bell-shaped flowers and spreading, arching growth habit. Leaves are dark green, oval and tapered, to 2.5 inches long. Dark pink flowers with pale pink-white interiors, to 1 1/4 inches long are produced in corymbs on short lateral twigs on previous years growth in late spring to early summer.Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds. Native to China. Very nice in a mixed shrub border.

Red Weigela

The Red Weigela, Weigela Vaniceki, is a deciduous shrub with dark red flowers. It is a full sized plant with good hardiness.It grows best in full sun to partial sun. Foliage is deep, purple-tinted green and forms a compact mound, reaching 6' when mature. Prefers well-drained soil. Prune older branches after they finish blooming.

Red Prince Weigela

The Red Prince Weigela, Weigela florida Red Prince, is a deciduous shrub with dark red flowers. It is a full sized plant with good hardiness. The red flowers hold late into the season.It grows best in full sun to partial sun. Foliage is deep, purple-tinted green and forms a compact mound, reaching 6' when mature. Prefers well-drained soil. Red, bell-shaped flowers bloom in early summer and again in late summer. Flowers attract hummingbirds. Suitable for shrub and mixed border.

Variegated Weigela

The Variegated Wiegela, Weigela florida 'Variegata', has a compact habit, growing 4-6' high and wide. It has grey leaves with yellow/cream fringes, and dark pink flowers. This deciduous shrub is grown for its showy bell-shaped flowers and spreading, arching growth habit.Dark pink flowers with pale pink-white interiors, to 1 1/4 inches long are produced in corymbs on short lateral twigs on previous years growth in late spring to early summer. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds. Very nice in a mixed shrub border.

Common Witch-hazel

The Common Witch-Hazel, Hamamelis virginiana, is extraordinary in its flowering habits. It flowers in late October to early December. Many times its slender yellow petals are the only signs of color in the dormant woods. After pollination, the fruits become dormant for the winter, developing over the following growing season and maturing in the fall, 10-12 months after pollination. As individuals, witch-hazel probably does not live more than 100 years, but they reproduce from root sprouts, and clones may live for a very long time.

Vernal Witch-hazel

The Vernal Witch-hazel, Hamamelis vernalis, is a deciduous, winter-blooming shrub, with a rounded habit which typically grows 6-10' tall with a somewhat larger spread. The fragrant, globular flower clusters have variable coloration, but flowers most frequently have yellow petals and reddish inner calyxes. Extract obtained from the leaves, bark and stems was formerly used medicinally by native Americans for, inter alia, external treatment of sprains, bruises and inflammations.

Variegated Yucca

The Variegated Yucca, Yucca glauca variegated, have stiff evergreen rosettes and are part of the scene in hot dry Central and North American scrublands. Yuccas are hardier than they appear, and only fail in cold exposed inland positions, where they are better grown as container plants. Otherwise they are handsome architectural foliage plants for dry, sunny borders. The remarkable flower-spikes, 6' or more high, appear when plants are five or more years old.
