Red Peony

The Red Peony, Paeonia lactiflora. Although there are many Peonies on the market in this day and age, at this time we have chosen unnamed varieties, simply pink, red and white. Peonies are one of the best cut flowers and are often used in the Midwest to decorate gravesites on Memorial Day. All of our peonies are widely adaptable to most soils across the country. It also looks good in mass. It is not uncommon to see peonies planted along the driveway or lane in a mass.

White Peony

Rosenkuppel Oregano

The Rosenkuppel Oregano, Origanum laevigatum, is a great ground cover used in mass or alone. It forms attractive mats of round dark green leaves that are the perfect backdrop for its beautiful, ornamental dark pink flowers. Its contrasting purple calyces really make this plant stand out amongst the rest. Blooming from August to October, it has a plant height of 15" and a width of 24". Oregano needs to be planted in a full sun area with well-drained soil. Try planting with Pennisetum 'Little Bunny'.

Red Dragon

The Persicaria Red Dragon is a wonderful variety in the Persicaria family. With its superb, variegated maroon leaves with burgundy heart shaped centers and a white chevron, it has a plant height of 2 and a spread of 18-23. The flowers are white and bloom in June and July, but this plant is more noted for its foliage. It does need a well-drained area, making sure it is not over watered. Red Dragon will look great in any perennial garden, in mixed container, woodland edge or near ponds and streams.

Atropurpurea Phlox

The Phlox Atropurpurea, 'Phlox subulata', is an ideal ground cover with masses of tiny wine-red flowers and a thick mat of semi-evergreen foliage. Blooming from April to May, it has a plant height of 4-6 and a spread of 12-18. It is a definite addition to any perennial garden. Atropurpurea needs to be planted in a full sun area in well-drained soil. Use Atropurpurea in rock gardens, as a spread over curbs and short retaining walls, or in difficult edges of dry streambeds.

Flower Power Phlox

The Phlox Flower Power, 'Phlox maculata', a Blooms of Bressingham plant, is a new and exciting addition to the (tall Phlox varieties. The attractive creamy white and pink wands make it even more beautiful. Flower Power is shorter, sturdier and more mildew-resistant than most in its family. Blooming from July to August, it has a plant height of 42 and a spread of 36-48. Flower Power needs to be planted in a full sun area in well-drained soil. Use Flower Power in rock gardens, as a background plant or with Ornamental Grasses and Hibiscus.

Pink Turtlehead

The Chelone Pink Turtlehead, Chelone obliqua, is a deep carmine pink wildflower that resembles snapdragons and heads of turtles. The dark green foliage makes Pink Turtlehead beautiful all year long. The flowers bloom from mind summer to early fall, with a plant height of 3 and a spread of 18-24. This low maintenance perennial is highly pest resistant and will look great under a tree canopy or in a colorful perennial bed. Try Pink Turtlehead with Echinacea Coneflower White Swan or Physostegia Miss Manners.

Little Spire Russian Sage

The Perovskia Little Spire Sage, Perovskia atriplicifolia, is an exciting new variety to the Sage family. Growing only 3 high with a plant spread of 12-18, it is one that should not be missed. The lavender-purple flowers make a great contrast with its silvery, fragrant foliage. Deadhead for repeat bloom time. It does need a well-drained area. Little Spire looks great anywhere in the garden. It is resistant to deer, attracts butterflies, an excellent choice for hot, dry gardens, and has attractive winter foliage.

Blue Hills Salvia

The Salvia Blue Hills, Salvia nemorosa Blauhugel, has glowing purple stems loaded with true blue flowers that bloom from June to October. With its gray-green aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. Blue Hills has a plant height of 15 and a spread of 18-24 and stays in excellent compact form. Salvia Blue Hills should be planted in full sun in a moist well-drained area. Blooms look wonderful next to Sedum Matrona, Achillea 'Coronation Gold' and Saliva Snow Hill.

Burgundy Bliss Salvia

The Salvia Burgundy Bliss, 'Salvia lyrata', has unique, white flowers that are kissed with a lavender accent. The evergreen and burgundy foliage gives Burgundy Bliss its name. Blooming from June to October, the aromatic foliage it makes an attractive accent all summer long. It has a plant height of 12 and a spread of 12-18 and stays in excellent compact form. Burgundy Bliss is a magnet for butterflies, bees and hummingbirds and is deer-resistant. It is hardy for container gardening and provides excellent cut flowers.

Caradonna Salvia

The Salvia Caradonna, Salvia nemorosa, has glowing purple stems loaded with violet-purple flowers that bloom from June to October. With its gray-green aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. Salvia Caradonna was awarded the Outstanding New Perennial in 2000 by the International Hardy Plant Union. It is hardy for container gardening and provides excellent cut flowers. Blooms look wonderful next to Sedum Matrona, Achillea 'Coronation Gold' and Saliva Snow Hill.

East Friesland Salvia

The Salvia East Friesland, Salvia nemorosa Ostfriesland, has glowing purple stems loaded with violet-purple flowers that bloom from June to October. With its blue-green, lance-shaped aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. It has a plant height of 18 and a spread of 18-24 and stays in excellent compact form. Salvia East Friesland should be planted in full sun in a moist well-drained area. Blooms look wonderful next to Sedum Matrona, Achillea 'Coronation Gold' and Saliva Snow Hill.

Marcus Salvia

The Salvia Marcus, Salvia nemorosa, is a new dwarf version of the Salvia May Night. With its compact, dense habit of growing, it is easy to accommodate in any perennial garden. Spikes of intense violet-blue flowers bloom on top gray-green foliage and flower from June to October. Marcus has a plant height of 12 and a spread of 12-18. It is hardy for container gardening, as a border plant and provides excellent cut flowers. Blooms look wonderful next to Sedum Matrona, Achillea 'Coronation Gold' and Saliva Snow Hill.

May Night Salvia

The Salvia May Night, Salvia nemorosa Mainacht, has glowing purple stems loaded with violet-purple flowers that bloom from June to October. With its blue-gray, lance-shaped aromatic foliage, it makes an attractive accent all summer long. It has a plant height of 18 and a spread of 18-24 and stays in excellent compact form. Selected Perennial Plant of the year in 1997, one can see why. Blooms look wonderful next to Sedum Matrona, Achillea 'Coronation Gold', and Saliva Snow Hill.

Plumosa Salvia

Blue Diamonds Scabiosa

The Scabiosa japonica 'Blue Diamonds, also known as Pincushion Flower, is a dwarf selection that only reaches 6 inches tall. The wonderful lilac-blue flowers bloom from June to October. Blue Diamonds is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its green foliage, it has a plant spread of 12-18", and it is disease resistant. Blue Diamonds is great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds and does excellent in rock gardens. It will do excellent for front-of-the-border areas, with Coreopsis Moonbeam', Dianthus 'Bath's Pink', in mass plantings or as cut flowers.

Butterfly Blue Scabiosa

The Scabiosa 'Butterfly Blue, Scabiosa columbaria, also know as the Pincushion Flower, has wonderful 2" lavender-blue flowers that bloom from June to October. Butterfly Blue is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 12 and a spread of 12-18". It is also disease resistant. Scabiosa Butterfly Blue was name Perennial Plant of the Year in 2000, and one can see why. It will do excellent for front-of-the-border areas, with Coreopsis Moonbeam', Dianthus 'Bath's Pink', in mass plantings or as cut flowers.

Blanca Scabiosa

The Scabiosa 'Blanca, Scabiosa Hybrid, is a small flowered form of the Pincushion Flower and it exhibits a a compact habit. 'Blancat' is a reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 8 and a spread of 12-18", not to mention being disease resistant. It is best to plant Scabiosa in full sun, with well-drained soil and should be watered regularly throughout the warmer months to increase its overall performance. Noted for very free flowering, butterfly-friendly, and a good cut flower.

Giant Blue Scabiosa

The Scabiosa 'Giant Blue' is a vigous version of the 'Buttefly Blue'. It has larger lavender-blue flowers that bloom from June to October. Giant Blue is reminiscent of a pincushion full of pins. With its gray-green foliage, it has a plant height of 16 and a spread of 12-18". It is also disease resistant. It will do excellent for front-of-the-border areas, with Coreopsis Moonbeam', Dianthus 'Bath's Pink', in mass plantings or as cut flowers.

The Scabiosa 'Pink Passion', provides a nonstop display of pink Pincushion flowers bloom above compact foliage. Pink Passions are the nearest things to a perpetually blooming hardy perennial we've seen.
