Red Ixia

Lords and Ladies

The Lord and Ladies, 'Arum italicum', a fall planted bulb, not only grows wild in Italy but also in Southern France and Spain, so it is a real Mediterranean plant. What makes this Arum so different is that its beautifully shaped. Marked and veined leaves appear in autumn and stay green all winter. Its inflorescence, the only conspicuous part being its soft yellow-green bract, consists of a spadix. Arum takes a year or two to establish well. Persian Fritillaria

The Persian Fritillaria, 'Fritillaria persica', is a fall planted bulb. The impressive Crown Imperial has a bundle of bell-like flowers all around the stem and a whimsical crown of green leaves. The pendulous flowers make a bold statement in the garden. It is by far the most well-known species and also one of the earliest plants to be cultivated. Mark the location of the bulbs to avoid any damage when digging or raking. The Persian Fritillaria blooms in mid to late spring for a 3 week period. These plants are deer, squirrel, and rabbit resistant.

Pink Buttercups

The Pink Buttercups, 'Oxalis adenophylla', a fall planted bulb, forms thick carpets of bright, deep pink flowers. The flowers are not the only attractive part of the plant. The finely incised greenish-gray leaves only add to Oxalis adenophylla's beauty. Oxalis adenophylla originates from Chili and Argentina where it grows high up in the mountains. This plant is also known as Chilean Wood Sorrel, Silver Shamrock, Pink Carpet Oxalis, Pink Sauerklee, and Sandoxalis. They prefer well drained soils. They do not winter well in wet soils.

Snowdrop

The Snowdrop, 'Galanthus Nivalis', is a fall planted bulb. Snowdrops are probably the very first flowers to peep their heads through the ground at the end of the winter, as soon as the snow melts. The small nodding, milky white flowers are bell-shaped and have green spots. They arise in frosty ground, multiplying freely over time. If clumps become too crowded, lift and divide them into smaller groups in late spring. They are great for indoor forcing, rock gardens, containers, mass planting, and borders. The Spanish Bluebells 'Assorted Colors', 'Hyacinthoides hispanica ', is a fall planted bulb. These Spanish Bluebells produce elegant flowers with a heavenly, sweet perfume. This is one of the tallest-growing Scilla species. Hanging from the sturdy, round flower stalks are lots and lots of broad, bell-shaped flowers. Bluebells bloom for a 3 week period in late spring/early summer. These plants are deer, rabbit, and squirrel resistant. Spanish Bluebells are great for mass planting, containers, rock gardens, and borders.

Mixed Colors Sparaxis

The Sparaxis or Harlequin flower, 'Sparaxis', a fall planted bulb, produces lovely mixed colored flowers including orange, white, yellow, red, purple, and pink. This plant has sword-shaped leaves and star-shaped flowers. The Sparaxis is also commonly known as the Wand Flower. The Harlequin flower looks great in beds, borders, gardens and containers.

The Spring Beauty 'Blue', 'Scilla siberica', a fall planted bulb, is one of the first to bloom in the spring time. They will bloom for a 2 to 3 week period. Spring Beauty is particularly attractive under spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia, azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias. The Spring Star Flower 'Rolf Fiedler', 'Ipheion uniflorum', a fall planted bulb, produces gorgeous blue flowers. These gorgeous flowers are six-petaled, star-shaped, and are sweetly fragrant. The grass-like foliage smells like garlic when crushed. The Spring Star Flower is great for edges of borders and plant layering. After a few years, if blooms begin to decline, the clumps need to be dug up, bulbs divided, and replanted to start afresh. This can be done at spring's end or whenever blooms have declined, or as soon as the grass begins to die back.
